PERES PROJECT: 1ST PHASE CONDLUDED WITH AN EVENT IN BRUSSELS

PERES

The first phase of "PERES - Promoting European Rail Excellence outSide EU" project concluded at an event in the Atrium14 business center in Brussels, gathering railway industry professionals from all over Europe.

Co-funded by the European Union's COSME Programme, the PERES European Strategic Cluster Partnership (ESCP-4i) coordinated by DITECFER and composed of four other railway clusters from France, Germany, United Kingdom and Southeast Europe, explored the needs and potentials of the SMEs of the European Rail Supply Industry, and set up a framework for internationalisation to markets outside Europe.

The project started in January 2018, and has analysed over 250 SME in the railway industry from 10 European countries, seeking to create pan-European supply value-chains, locate potential solutions that can be successfully implemented in non-European markets, and identify the critical issues, the desired target countries and the type of support that European SMEs need in order to successfully offer their products and services on non-European markets.

The RECORD Delegation was composed by several transnational SMEs as the Partners had decided to organise a working session and B2B among their companies to discuss about innovation topics and instruments.

On Day-1 the RECORD Delegation was presented the Tuscany Region ERDF “POR CreO” policies and instruments, as well as case studies of ERDF funding in support of the Rail supply chain, with specific attention to the opportunities for SMEs, both direct and indirect. These include the establishment of a Regional Cluster for Rail Technologies (“DITECFER”), open calls for collaborative R&D projects, a catalogue of specialised services in the field of R&D and Innovation for which SMEs can receive a 50% co-funding, the creation/co-funding of laboratories specialized in the railway field (e.g. “MDM-Lab” of University of Firenze).

4 the Technical Visits organized at sites and companies the ERDF “POR CreO” has co-funded, thus supporting the sustainability of transport, that is the goal of the RECORD project: at the Operations Control Center and Maintenance Depot of Firenze Tramways operated by “GEST S.p.A.”; at the “Demo rooms” for Tramways and Dubai Metro at “Thales Italia S.p.A.”, that – as Large company - is co-developing with local SMEs new solutions for safety and security of tramways; at the “Italcertifer S.p.A.” Rolling Stock Laboratories – with the largest anechoic chamber in Europe for electrical tests of trains -, where, together with the certification and homologation tests of railway systems, also are performed R&D activities by four universities; at a dynamic and innovative SME, “Elfi S.r.l.”, that develops and manufactures advanced electronics solutions both for rolling stock and infrastructure.

The city of Pistoia hosted the successful networking event among the participating partners and their stakeholders, their brainstorming on how to support R&D and innovation and on what key-topics in view of possible trans-regional collaborations, and individual B2B to further discuss such opportunities.

The Study Visit has involved 42 people from 5 different countries – Italy, France, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden – and the Pistoia meeting has created direct interactions among 19 companies, of which 13 SMEs operating both in the segments of vehicles and the safety of infrastructures.

DISCOVER EUROPE WITH "DITECFER GAME"

DITECFER GAME

DITECFER GAME makes real the idea, born within DITECFER, to invent something able to attract, inspire, entertain children and youngsters living in our territory towards the possibility to travel throughout Europe by train thanks to the European Corridors ("TEN-T"), that link every corner of Europe and hundreds of interesting cities, all to be discovered. A possibility we can benefit from thanks to the freedom of movement the European Union gives as as European Citizens.

But there is more: our city, Pistoia, capital of railways in Italy, needs people with passion to deliver trains and railways of the future.
Our wish is that DITECFER GAME may contribute to create and nurture this passion and help youngsters to make of it an exciting profession for their lives.

So we gave Birth to "DITECFER GAME", thanks to collaboration with "Studio Phaedra", that made of our idea a reality, developing graphics and game rules.

The game was printed in 700 copies and launched today within the events sponsored by DITECFER for the UNICEF World's Children Day 2018.
The game will be distributed at the photo exhibition "ANONIMUS", open at the "Battistero" of Pistoia throughout all winter holidays, until the depletion.

A success in terms of enthusiasm from all ages. This is bringing us to go further: not only new printing but also the realization in other languages, so to make our message travel together with players' fantasy.

ERCI TASK FORCE ON CYBERSECURITY: 120 PERSONS GATHER IN FIRENZE

DITECFER organised in Florence the 4th meeting of the “ERCI Cybersecurity in Railways Task Force”.
For such event, DITECFER chose the location of the Rolling Stock Laboratories in Osmannoro, owned by RFI – the Italian State Railways Infrastructure Manager, and managed by Italcertifer – the company of the Italian State Railways providing testing and certification activities.
Around 120 persons attended, representing the main Italian companies of the rail supply industry plus some attendances from ERCI members in Spain, Germany, France, Israel.

The agenda built by DITECFER aimed to inspire the participants from the awareness to the technological point of view. The key-note speech by DITECFER Coordinator, Veronica Elena Bocci, also representing ERCI Board, set the challenging scene for the day.
The event then brought on stage the institutional and R&D bodies with thorough competences in the cybersecurity field: ECSO-European Cyber Security Organisation, IEC-International Electrotechnical Commission and the Cyber Academy of the University of Modena and Reggio. Key-messages to the participants were sent from these speakers, that clearly highlighted the real risk the railway sector is facing, and raising the key-point that there won’t ever be enough money to protect all aspects of railway systems, so the key-focus has necessarily to go on reducing the consequences of cyberattacks.
The operational aspects were covered by FSI-the Italian State Railways, that – unlike other railways in Europe and America – received thousands of attacks but had no damage up to now because of huge R&D investments; the certification aspects – that will be modified by new TSIs and Common Safety Rules that will take into account cybersecurity – were covered by Italcertifer. As large industries, Thales Italia and Mer Mec presented the available solutions they have developed to mitigate the cyber risks in railway transportation, with special reference to the track-side assets and systems.
The final SMEs Session was also very inspirational, because the 6 case-studies presented very specific solutions on specific aspects of the railway system: from ResilTech, developing methodologies and solutions for systems’ resilience to Cylus (Israel), developing a comprehensive solution specific for the railway sector; from H-ON with strong know-how on industrial cybersecurity applicable to railway environment, to Sysnet Telematica and Barracuda, developing firewall solutions, and finally UM-Labs (United Kingdom) developing cybersecurity solutions for VOIP systems.

The 5th “ERCI Cybersecurity in Railways Task Force” meeting will be held on March 28th in Berlin.
